Here are this week’s biggest and most intriguing stories.

Warner Bros Trying to Get One More DC Project Shooting this Year

According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll Warner Bros and DC are trying to push one more project into production this year in order to have two movies coming out in 2018. Aquaman is set for a December release date that year, but that would be the only movie they have coming out that year and their plan calls for two a year. Kroll says that the possible candidates are Gotham City Sirens, Green Lantern Corps, Suicide Squad 2, and Justice League Dark. Look these are all intriguing projects and the fact that Warner wants to rush one of them worries me. They rushed Suicide Squad and look what happened with that movie, it was trash. I think they should just take their time with everything and just worry about making all of them the best they can. Do not worry about when they are released, just make them good and the money will follow.

Robert Downey Jr. to Star in Doctor Dolittle Reboot

THR is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the Doctor Dolittle character and have already set a movie into production. They have already locked up Robert Downey Jr. to play the titular character and hired Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) to write and direct. The movie will be titled The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and use story elements from the books written in the 1920’s by Hugh Lofting. This will be the third iteration of the character following Rex Harrison’s 1967 portrayal and Eddie Murphy’s turn as the character in 1998. While Downey seems perfect for this role, I worry he might have given up on indies and other dramatic acting following the failure of The Judge. He is a fantastic actor and spending all of his time doing franchise movies seems like a waste to me. Look I am sure this will be a very enjoyable movie, but I hope he mixes in some more interesting projects along the way. There is no release date as of this time.

Live Action Mulan Not Expected to be Musical

President of Motion Picture Production over at Disney Sean Bailey sat down for an interview with Vulture recently and divulged an interesting detail about Disney’s upcoming live action Mulan movie. The production, which just recently hired Nikki Caro to direct, will not be a musical like its animated predecessor according to Bailey. While Disney has gone that root with the recently released Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast, as well as their upcoming remake of Aladdin they feel that it is not necessary for this film and the tone they are going for. They are going for a grittier “BraveheartGame of Thrones” feel as well as a “fresh take on female empowerment”. As disappointing as it is that we won’t get to hear “Make a Man Out of You” or “Reflection” it makes perfect sense to me. Mulan lends itself to a more epic and grand scale where the songs would feel out of place. There is no release date at this time.

Princess Team Up Movie Being Shopped Around to Buyers

The Tracking Board is reporting that Paradigm’s David Boxerbaum and literary manager Jake Wagner are shopping a new movie called Princesses. The movie is said to be a female driven, Avengers style team up movie featuring classic fairy tale princesses. Nir Paniry, a relative unknown, wrote the script and it is garnering a lot of attention from major studios. The script is being sent to all buyers simultaneously and if Disney were to get it they already have a director to attach to the project in Joachim Ronning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales). This all sounds very interesting to me and I really hope Disney gets it. If any other studio gets it then they will only be able to use princesses in the public domain, but Disney could use some of the more recent princesses that they specifically own. Overall this sounds like it could be awesome. We will have to keep our eyes on this project.

Sony Developing Black Cat/Silver Sable Movie

Sony continues to make baffling decisions concerning their superhero movies. Following the announcement that the Venom movie was back on track, THR is reporting that they are developing a movie based around frequent Spider-Man frenemies, Black Cat and Silver Sable. Black Cat is basically Marvel’s version of Catwoman while Silver Sable is a non super powered person with incredible hand to hand fighting skills as well as weapon’s training. The project is said to be a high priority for the studio. They are expected to go out to directors soon and hope to start shooting this fall. It should be noted however that, as THR reporter Borys Kit tweeted out, this movie and Venom are not attached to the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Kevin Feige is not involved at all. It is that last sentence that worries me. Sony does not have the best track record with comic book movies and creating these separate universes is just going to confuse movie goers. This just sounds like a bad idea all around.

Michael Shannon Front Runner to Play Cable

THR had a big week this week as they also reported that Michael Shannon is now the front runner to play Cable in Deadpool 2. Not too long ago I told you guys about David Harbour being at the front of the list, and that is still a possibility as the report cautions that Shannon does not have the role yet and is not the only one being considered. Other reports also put forth the idea that scheduling could get in the way as The Wrap had initially reported with the Harbour news. Another interesting note thrown out their by Collider this week is that Brad Pitt actually met with Ryan Reynolds about the role, but eventually decided to pass on it. If Shannon does end up getting the job, this would be a great coup for Fox. Shannon is one of the best character actors working today and could bring the right amount of gruffness to this role. He also has an incredibly dry sense of humor that would work perfectly playing off of Ryan Reynolds. Look no further than his turn in The Night Before from a few years ago to get an idea of that. Deadpool 2 is scheduled for a 2018 release date.

Chicago Cubs Movie in the Works

In another THR report, we found out that Radar Pictures is working on a movie about the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series win. Based off of catcher David Ross’ memoir entitled ‘Teammate: My Journey in Baseball and a World Series for the Ages,’ the movie will recall some of the more important moments in Ross’ 15 year career while centering on his final game where he became the oldest player to homer in a Game 7 of the World Series. This is a brilliant idea for a movie. Even if people do not like baseball or sports they were still riveted by the Cubs’ World Series run last year. I had so many people in my Twitter timeline who never watch baseball watching that game and they were glued to their televisions. This is a story for everyone and is sure to be a big hit.

Han Solo Movie Plot Details Revealed

Talking at the USC Tech Conference this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger told the audience some new information about the upcoming Young Han Solo spinoff movie. He told the crowd that the movie will span from when Solo was 18 until he was 24 while covering how he met Chewbacca and how he acquired the Millennium Falcon. None of this is unexpected, but its nice to get confirmation that this will be covered in the movie. This is all stuff we want to know and I am not complaining. With everyone involved I just want this movie now. It is scheduled to hit theaters May 25th, 2018.

Brett Ratner Bashes Rotten Tomatoes

A fresh Rotten Tomatoes score has become a badge of some sorts for movies, but not everyone in the industry is too thrilled with the review aggregation site. Speaking with EW at the Sun Valley Film Festival, film director and producer Brett Ratner had the following to say:

“The worst thing that we have in today’s movie culture is Rotten Tomatoes. I think it’s the destruction of our business. I have such respect and admiration for film criticism. When I was growing up film criticism was a real art. And there was intellect that went into that. And you would read Pauline’s Kael’s reviews, or some others, and that doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s about a number. A compounded number of how many positives vs. negatives. Now it’s about, ‘What’s your Rotten Tomatoes score?’ And that’s sad, because the Rotten Tomatoes score was so low on Batman v Superman I think it put a cloud over a movie that was incredibly successful.”

Personally I feel like Ratner is out of his mind. Film criticism has not changed at all and if people are too stupid to realize that Rotten Tomatoes is a review aggregator then its their own fault. Yes Batman vs. Superman may have been successful financially, but not nearly as successful as it could have or should have been. The reason a cloud was cast over it was because it was bad and even without Rotten Tomatoes that cloud still would have been there. It just brought all of those bad reviews to one place.

Netflix to Produce Movie on Motley Crue

Netflix is in talks to make a movie about the rise of 80’s metal band Motley Crue according to THR. The movie will be called The Dirt and will be based on the book The Dirt: COnfessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band which was written by members of the band and author Neil Strauss. The band members wills serve as co-producers on the film and the script is being written by Rich Wilkes and Tom Kapinos. The rumor is that the script is really good and will cover the full spectrum of the band’s excess of drug use and other exploits. Attached to direct is Jeff Tremaine (Jackass) and Variety’s Justin Kroll added in his write up that though Netflix is only still in talks they do have top choices for some of the lead roles. Apparently Liam Hemsworth, Emory Cohen, and Douglas Booth are the top choices for Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and Tommy Lee though no official offers have been made yet. This should be an interesting project to watch unfold as Netflix has been making some very interesting projects the last few years.
