First photos of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft hit the web
Not too long ago we got word that MGM would be rebooting Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander in the leading role of Lara Croft. After casting many of the major roles, cameras have just recently started rolling on this project and thanks to The Daily Mail we have our first images of Vikander as the badass hero. She looks great and seems to really embody the hero. I do not know much about Lara Croft as I have never played any of the games or seen the Angelina Jolie movie, but the talent behind this one is interesting. Barring a bad trailer I am in to check this one out. Tomb Raider is directed by Roar Uthaug and stars Vikander, Walton Goggins, Dominic West and Daniel Wu. It is scheduled to hit theaters March 16th, 2018.
Paramount pulls World War Z 2 and Friday the 13th reboot from schedule
Paramount did not have the greatest week as they were forced to pull two big name movies from their schedule and cancel one of them altogether. Variety tells us that World War Z 2 was pulled from its June 9th release date in order to develop the script more and court a new director for the project. They hope to hit a 2018 or 2019 release date. Variety also told us that the Friday the 13th reboot was pulled from the schedule, but then The Hollywood Reporter dropped an exclusive saying that the movie is canceled. Paramount told Platinum Dunes, the production company behind the reboot, and director Breck Eisner to halt pre-production altogether. The studio gave no official response to this, but THR’s sources say that the company got weary of the reboot after Rings did poorly at the box office this past weekend. We will see if either of these movies get off the ground anytime soon.
The Collector confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War
Despite the fact that Avengers: Infinity War started filming two weeks ago in Atlanta, Marvel still has not sent out an official press release detailing the film’s cast. We have been getting a lot of pseudo confirmations from social media and educated guesses, but nothing official. Add this to the list as Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos, recently mentioned on Instagram that he has been working with actor Benicio del Toro, who plays The Collector, as well Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana on the movie. We already knew about the other two Guardians characters, but del Toro is a new addition to the already monstrous cast. I cannot wait for that press release as it is going to be miles long. Avengers: Infinity War stars literally everyone in the Marvel universe and is set to hit theater on May 4th, 2018.
Jack Nicholson coming out of retirement
Variety is reporting that after seven years of not appearing in any movies, Jack Nicholson is coming back to the big screen. Apparently the actor will appear along side Kristen Wiig in an English-language remake of the German film from last year Toni Erdmann. The original is written and directed by Maren Ade and follows a practical joking father who tries to reconnect with his hard working daughter. Paramount is making the movie after acquiring the rights to the film and its an interesting move to make the movie so quickly after the last one came out. It’s even nominated for Best Foreign Film at the upcoming Oscars. It is not a weird move however to bring back Jack Nicholson who is a fantastic actor. I for one have been missing Nicholson’s presence on the big screen and cannot wait to see this movie. No word yet on director or release date.
Star Wars spoof movie coming
The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that that the guys behind Scary Movie, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, are working on a spoof of Star Wars to be titled Star Worlds Episode XXXIVE=MC2: The Force Awakens the Last Jedi Who Went Rogue. These are the same guys who also did Disaster Movie and Vampires Suck, so their track record isn’t great with Scary Movie being their only success. I am honestly not thrilled with this idea and it seems like they are trying to capitalize off the new found Star Wars craze. This seems like it will be terrible and may be a huge candidate to bomb at the box office. We will see what happens. There is no release date set, but they are aiming for a shoot of Fall 2017.
Oprah teams with Lee Daniels for Terms of Endearment Remake
The Wrap broke the story this week that Oprah Winfrey will be reteaming with her The Butler director, Lee Daniels, for a remake of the Oscar winning Terms of Endearment. Paramount has acquired the rights for Daniels to the movie about a difficult mother named Aurora who is looking for love while also following her daughter’s family troubles. The original starred Shirley MacLaine as Aurora, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels and John Lithgow and won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Winfrey is said to be in talks for the role of Aurora. Work will begin on the script soon and a release date is yet to be determined. I have no idea if this is a good idea or not, but I am just tired of remakes. Can’t movie goers stop supporting this bad habit and pay to see original movies instead? Only time will tell.
Halloween reboot coming with John Carpenter’s blessing
Late Thursday night original Halloween director John Carpenter announced on his Facebook page that the upcoming reboot of the movie that he is producing has found its director and writer. Typically a comedy team, David Gordon Green will direct and write the script with Danny McBride. Carpenter said that they apparently blew him and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum away with their take and that he might even consider doing the music for the movie himself like he did for the original. This is quite interesting news and recent remakes of horror movies have not done well so we will see if this can break the curse. There is currently no cast, but Halloween will hit theaters October 19th, 2018.
