Its that time of year again! Time for the big game, the Super Bowl and you know what that means. Movie trailers during the big game! Let’s break down all of these trailers.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell is an adaptation of a popular Japanese anime and stars Scarlett Johansson. There really is not much to see in this trailer. It has some really cool visuals, but if you weren’t already excited for this movie then it really will do nothing to change your mind. Personally, I have no interest right now because I hated the last time Johansson tried to do high concept science fiction (Lucy) and director Rupert Sanders does not inspire much confidence. Plus there is the casting controversy of having a white female in the lead role of what is essentially a Japanese story. All of this really adds up to a movie that I am not very excited for. Ghost in the Shell stars Johansson, Michael Wincott and Michael Pitt and will hit theaters on March 31st.

Transformers: The Last Knight

The Transformers franchise has always been a mess under the direction of Michael Bay. Each movie has been worse than the last and the fourth one was one long garbage fest. This fifth one looks bonkers. The log line involves a missing Optimus Prime, time travel, King Arthur, and Nazis. All signs point towards this another mess of a movie, but damn does Bay know how to put together a good trailer. This one is no exception. Its hard not to get excited when you here Anthony Hopkins voice and see all of the cool robot fights including one between Prime and Bumblebee. I have all confidence this movie is going to be a dumpster fire, but this spot is pretty good. Transformers: The Last Knight stars Mark Wahlberg, Hopkins, Laura Haddock, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro and Josh Duhamel and will be released on June 23rd.

You may not have heard of this movie, but you have definitely heard of its cast. It stars Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson and is about a team of scientists who discover life on Mars. It kind of looks like a cross between Alien and Gravity. This spot is a pretty good one as it builds tension and keeps you in the dark about the actual plot of the movie. It looks like it could be a tense thrill ride and its hard to go wrong with that cast. The movie also has a solid director in Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick the guys behind the genius script of Deadpool. There is not much to dislike about this movie and I look forward to seeing this summer. Life will hit theaters on March 24th.

John Wick 2

John Wick was one of the biggest surprises when it came to action movies over the last few years and it catapulted Keanu Reeves back into the limelight. It was an endlessly fun shoot ’em up action movie and the sequel looks to be much of the same. Who can blame them, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. With a stellar cast and a great action director behind the camera this looks to be a February hit. This spot is just as fun as the movie itself and even takes time to poke fun at its box office competitor Fifty Shades Darker. Its a great spot and just another notch in the belt of a great marketing campaign. John Wick 2 stars Reeves, Ruby Rose, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne and Common and hits theaters this coming weekend on February 10th.

A Cure for Wellness

This is a very mysterious movie from the director of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise Gore Verbinski. The official log line says its about an ambitious young executive who goes to retrieve the CEO he works for from a “wellness center” and discovers there might be more going on there than meets the eye. This spot does not give us much, but does keep the generally creepy tone that want you to feel heading into the movie. It looks like it could be quite interesting. A Cure for Wellness stars Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth and hits theaters February 17th.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The team is back with some exciting additions! This is everything you could want in a Super Bowl spot. It was concise and to the point, introducing each team member with quick bits of action. They then punctuate it with a cool hero pose and a nice Drax joke. It seems like he and Baby Groot will be the stars of the show again. I cannot wait for this movie and this did everything I needed it to in order to whet my appetite. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell and hits theaters on May 5th.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Disney gave us our second look at the fifth Pirates movie and we finally got a look at some the fan favorite returning characters. The Pirates franchise has been dumped on for a few years now, but I see them for what they are and that’s dumb fun action movies. This teaser gave us a good look at the scale of this new movies. The special effects look great and I cannot wait for Javier Bardem as the ghostly new villain. This looks like it will be another fun entry in the franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Brenton Thwaites and Bardem. It will hit theaters on May 26th.

Logan has been one of my most anticipated movies of this year. Its trailers have been some of the best of the year and it looks like a superhero movie with an indie movie flair. This spot is no different and just carries on the somber tone of the other trailers. With a haunting cover of Amazing Grace playing over it, this trailer really hits you in the feels. I just love the look and feel of this movie and I cannot wait to see it. Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook and Richard E. Grant and is directed by James Mangold. It hits theaters on March 3rd.

The Fate of the Furious

Universal is back at it again with their highly popular and successful Fast and the Furious franchise. This time Vin Diesel’s Domonic Toretto is somehow evil and the team has to chase after him to prevent another world ending catastrophe. This looks like the most ridiculous of the whole franchise and a movie that almost seems impossible to not have fun with. The cast is so charismatic and as long as you know what you are getting into with this movie you will have a good time. The Fate of the Furious stars Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson and is directed by Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray. It hits theaters April 14th.

Paramount’s reboot of the popular 90’s television series was the final movie to release a spot tonight. It was kinda funny and I have no doubt the movie will be hilarious, but the spot did not do much for me. Plus there was some godawful green screen effects in the last few seconds of spot. I like a lot of people in this movie so hopefully it will be good, but this was one of the weaker spots of the night. Baywatch is directed by Seth Gordon and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Kelly Rohrbach and Hannibal Buress. It opens on May 26th.
